Music Monday [Crazy & Anything Goes]

This past weekend, my husband and I spent time on Fort Myers Beach celebrating a friend's 50th birthday.  As we relaxed in our chairs under a beautiful, sunny sky, we heard a couple of old tunes from a nearby tiki bar.  Later at lunch, we heard one of the same songs again and that had us reminiscing about music from the past.  They all remembered their first record.  Not me, I don't think I've ever even purchased a record.  We had cassette tapes in my day.  But I still know the songs from years ago.

Even though I was born in the 70s, I still love music from the 50s and 60s.  This is probably because my music loving mom grew up in that era.  She still has a lot of her 45s and we loved listening to them as kids.  My sisters and I thought some of those old songs were CRAZY and nothing like we had on the radio in the 80s.  I guess that's why we liked them.

Here are two of my favorite 45s from my mom's collection.

Speaking of oldies, I'm going to see the musical Anything Goes at the Straz Center tomorrow night.  Anything Goes debuted in 1934 and has been revived several times.  It will be at the Straz Center March 12-17.  This show is recommended for ages 8+ and even offers a Family Night on Wednesday, March 13.  For this performance only, you can get one free child's ticket (ages 12 and under) with the purchase of a full-priced adult ticket. Get there early for a free pre-show, family friendly activities and stay after for a free talkback with the artists.

Readers of Loving Life can save 30% off the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday performances with promo code PORTER30.

What music moves you?  Do you like music from an earlier era?

For Music Mondays, I’m teaming up with my good friend and fellow Marathon Mama, Denise. Please stop by and check out Denise's Music Monday.

  1. Rockin' Robin was my older brother's favorite & I'd listen to it when he played it on his phonograph. Remember those!?! Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs doing Little Red Riding Hood I can remember that one playing when we went to the Dunes over the loud speaker everyone rocked it! The last one ~hehehe~ that was when I was going to day camp and all the kids sang it! LOL Great stuff here girlfriend thanks for sharing.

  2. I do like a lot of the music that I grew up listening to with my mom and dad. They would always turn on the radio station "Oldies 103.3" driving in the car so I got used to listening to music from the 60's and 70's. My Dad loved Johnny Cash so I'm especially partial to his music. I wonder what will be considered "oldies" when I have kids- can't picture rap and hip hop being considered oldies music, thats a weird concept!

  5. The summer of '76, my DH was a DJ at a small radio station. Every night, he would sign off the air playing Rockin Robin. We lived too far away to pick up the station. I wish I could have heard him. But, Rockin Robin was a favorite of my to roller skate to in the early 70s.

Old music is really amazing and I love many of the groups from the 50s & 60s, too. I was born in the early 60s, so many of these tunes were still (and still are) quite popular. I love the classics!

The 80s was a good era for music and I have many favorites from that decade, too. The musicians today aren't nearly as talented as singers between the 50s - 90s.

Thanks for joining us on the virtual dance floor at Monday's Music Moves Me!
